Wayward, lets go with tiers. Search engines have results filtering tiers too (Safe/Moderate/Anything).
-
Wayward
atphoenix: that does nothing to placate the rabble who believes in impressing censorship upon others for their own good and the whole of society.
-
Wayward
only official people with meaningful purpose and authority may be allowed access to dangerous thoughts.
-
atphoenix
Did you not suggest tiers? I said I'd be okay with an option that lets me pick my own tier.

i need to trick google and my government into believing i'm acting in an official capacity when requesting deleted videos

TIL the larger Seagate Expansion Desktop externals have Exos drives in them. Nice.
-
JAA
Exos X, to be more precise, based on what I'm reading.
-
JAA
That's their enterprise NAS disk line.
-
Wayward
still, my reddit poll from several months ago asking whether to go with WD Elements or Seagate Expansion yielded 10-to-1 for WD. Same thread stating Exos X.
-
Wayward
A chief complaint being the Exos drives are loud
-
JAA
/r/DataHoarder I assume?
-
Wayward
may have been. I hardly use reddit.
-
JAA
That sub is full of 'I'll never ever buy Seagate because one of their models years ago had high failure rates' while ignoring that the same thing happened with WD (early Greens I think?). So it sounds about right.
-
JAA
The recent WD SMR bullshit turned it slightly, but the bias is still strong.
-
Wayward
I had the strongest of biases against WD in the 90's and early 2000's, and bought Maxtor drives exclusively. Until WD bought up Maxtor and replaced their own manufacturing with that of Maxtor's.
-
Wayward
So basically, I guess I'm still using Maxtor drives.
-
JAA
I'm using a mix. One brand for the primary copy, the other brand for the local backup. It's unlikely that both brands have a major systematic issue at the same time.
-
hook54321
i was under the impression seagate drives still have higher failure rates
-
JAA
I'd like to throw some Toshiba drives into the mix as well. Decided against it on my last larger purchase for some reason I don't remember right now.
-
JAA
hook54321: I haven't seen anything that seriously suggests that. The Backblaze data is the best publicly available dataset, but it's still to be taken with about a spoonful of salt.
-
Wayward
Toshabby hasn't been a quality name in years.
-
JAA
In fact, the latest Backblaze data has the lowest failure rate on a Seagate model (for drives that are present in significant numbers).
-
JAA
I was going to say that Toshiba is essentially using WD tech now, but apparently that transfer happened almost 10 years ago. Where the fuck did that time go?
-
atphoenix
let's not forget about Samsung and Quantum and Micropolis. Anyone remember the Quantum Bigfoot?
-
Wayward
Last thing I remember about Toshiba Drives was Apple using them in classic iPods
-
JAA
Ah lol, so ages ago.
-
Wayward
But I've got a 1 TB "Walmart Black Friday" Toshiba from 5 years ago still in operation.
-
JAA
LaCie, Hitachi, IBM... The list of former HDD manufacturers is endless.

JAA: oh, huh, nice. it's been awhile since i've looked at the data.
-
atphoenix
some MFM drives had stepper motors that had external visible moving parts. Some also had externally visible flywheels. That was useful if they developed stiction issues.
-
atphoenix
SATA is so much easier than the old stuff
-
JAA
-
Wayward
that's unique
-
atphoenix
nifty. never saw that style before
-
JAA
I wonder why... :-P

I did see an old drum storage cylinder at a fair once. It was basically 1 read/write head per track around the drum.
-
JAA
Seagate is reintroducing dual actuators. Or was planning to at least. Now with 100 % more moving parts and chance of failure!
-
Wayward
JAA: how about one of these?

-
Wayward
nice thing about "really" old drives is they had no controller board to burn out.
-
JAA
Very neat!

From 1991? Wow.
