Ryz: there's firefox addons, thunderbird, seamonkey, and palemoon browsers, basically.

All this talk and browsing for RSS readers, I've been finding some of those websites haven't been updated/active for years Oo;
-
JAA
Yeah, RSS readers have unfortunately become quite a niche thing, so there are lots of dead projects.
-
Wayward
Kids today tend to prefer JSON via "API", versus XML via "RSS".
-
JAA
(Most) Kids today have no idea what JSON, API, XML, or RSS even are. 'It just works' (until it doesn't).
-
Wayward
It helps that JSON/API has the full backing of the likes of Apple and Google, with complete ISO/IEEE standardization. While RSS is some imaginings of one dude on EFNet from #EZTV who had his domain name stolen from him then fell off the planet.
-
JAA
I mean, they're also completely different things, but whatever.
-
Wayward
at the same time, they're also exactly alike.
-
JAA
Uh, yeah, no.
-
Wayward
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
OrIdow6
Cannot tell if you're joking with that or not
-
hexa-
I can recommend miniflux. It's very lean but actively maintained.
-
hook54321
i hope waterfox re-adds rss/live bookmarks and ftp support

hook54321, dang over $1000 for Dr. Seuss books on auction!
-
atphoenix
why did mostly RSS die? Hard to deliver ads?
-
hook54321
imo partly because people started moving towards "Progressive Web Applications"
-
atphoenix
another tech I'm sad to see have mostly failed is OpenID. I do think that the choice of URLs as opposed to something that looked like an email address added confusion. I know that was confusing to me when I looked into it.

mozilla persona

such a great idea that went nowhere

» Doranwen really wishes she had her own personal non-destructive book scanner…
-
Doranwen
I've looked into the Archivist but didn't have $$ in the past and when I went to look now their store was dead, posted on the forums at least
-
Wayward
I can't read a lot of books scanned by book scanners, and wish they would have used a simple iphone on a tripod. too much bleed-thrugh showing the page reverse making for a distracting read.
-
Wayward
maybe if they scanned with a black backsheet they'd look better
-
Doranwen
anything would be better than my current scanner, which is a basic computer type one that's no larger than 8 1/2 x 11 - it's a PAIN scanning workbooks that are slightly larger, because even though there's extra white space, adjusting the book so that it's centered… :P
-
Doranwen
but I really want something along the lines of the Archivist, something with a cradle and a platen to hold the pages flat
-
Doranwen
if I had to insert black sheets behind pages so there wasn't bleed through, that would be way simpler than the current method I've been using
-
Doranwen
apparently the pandemic caused them to shut down production of the Archivist permanently :(
-
» Doranwen will have to shelve that desire, then - she's terrible at building anything hands-on and all that's left are open plans that one can use to build from
-
atphoenix
oh no, I didn't realize that scanner was no longer available as pre-cut parts. Probably we should run stuff through AB.

might also look at
forum.diybookscanner.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3401 which is good for 600-1100 pgs/hr
-
Doranwen
I didn't either until I looked
-
» Doranwen would scan in so much stuff if she could, though
-
Doranwen
I have multiple public domain books I own that I'm pretty sure are not digitized anywhere
-
» Doranwen read through a 1910s era one the other day that she's never seen online
-
Doranwen
and I've got stuff that isn't pd that I would still want to have a digital copy of, just in case
-
» Doranwen wishes she'd had the money to purchase a kit when they were making them
-
atphoenix
the scanner is supposed to be an open source, actually public domain, design, so it's only a matter of using plans and cutting and assembling parts. The kits made the job easier. E.g. side boards
diybookscanner.org/archivist/index1a57.html?page_id=127
-
Doranwen
yeah, I'm just absolutely terrible at that stuff, seriously
-
Doranwen
hands-on building anything is NOT something I'm good at
-
Doranwen
and I wouldn't get started on any of it without someone hand-holding the whole way
-
atphoenix
-
Doranwen
all of that is WAY over my ability
-
Doranwen
trust me
-
Doranwen
I would more happily barter hours of work on something than try to figure that out - I would give up very quickly because I just have absolutely no idea what I'm doing about ANY of it
-
Doranwen
my brain just doesn't even think that way
-
» Doranwen would rather someone build it for her and have her scan in a hundred books to repay them, lol
-
Doranwen
(I'm just throwing out a random number, but you get the idea)
-
Doranwen
not that that actually is something anyone really wants, but
-
Doranwen
I have more time than I have ability to figure that out
-
Doranwen
just reading the thread, my eyes glaze over
-
Doranwen
also… I think I know exactly which school the OP is talking about

(but moved a few hours away now)

interesting how that sometimes happens

could be wrong

I can't get any of the pics to load right now (my terrible 'net)
-
Doranwen
so I can't look to see
-
Doranwen
but the info they gave on it matches up perfectly
-
Doranwen
down to how long it's been around
-

YES
-

it IS
-
Doranwen
I saw their link to the yearbooks on IA
-
Doranwen
it is the same one
-
Doranwen
wow, what a small world
-
Doranwen
that is not a huge school either
-
» Doranwen also suspects any community scanning option near her would be unavailable due to the pandemic
-
EggplantN
It's America though
-
EggplantN
Surely one is open lol
-
Doranwen
in my state?
-
Doranwen
lol
-
EggplantN
What state?
-
Wayward
Hmm. Time to buy up copies of Dr. Suess books. 6+ have been canceled for waysism and have gone "out of print" overnight.
-
Doranwen
EggplantN: Washington
-
Doranwen
and I don't live anywhere near Seattle either, much more smaller town/country area
-
Wayward
The books are "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street", "If I Ran the Zoo", "McElligot's Pool", "On Beyond Zebra!", "Scrambled Eggs Super!", "The Cat's Quizzer"
-
Wayward
And now lots of rumblings over just about any other book/film that features anthropomorphic animals who are grouped together and discriminated against for their species' /typical characteristics/.
-
Wayward
Of note, Netflix just bought the rigts to Redwall which is 110% "species racism."
-
atphoenix
Can't call it canceling if the copyright holder decides to stop printing more. That's free market choice by the owner.
-
atphoenix
Might call it canceling if third parties force a stop.
-
Wayward
atphoenix: It's called 'canceling' if the expressed reason for the decision to stop printing isn't self-motivated, but due to rabid foaming pressure of a vocal minority.
-
Wayward
It's the same thing as a group of people tweeting for organization to fire someone or retract their award, and the organization then doing so.
-
Wayward
Which we *do* call 'canceling'
-
atphoenix
Not the same thing. I own property X. I can choose to sell property X if I like. If market conditions mean there isn't a demand for property X, I am fully within my rights to stop production. Free market.
-
Wayward
It's the same thing, bruh. Nobody said that canceling was a violation of rights.
-
atphoenix
Calling for award retractions and firing is not property ownership.
-
Wayward
You think people own exclusive rights their awards and achievements? nope.
-
Wayward
Awards Inc. owns property X
-
Wayward
You can also find Dr. Seuss book solidarity book burning videos on twitter. I'll check my public library to see if these books have been pulled down.
-
atphoenix
I don't care much what people do with their private copies (assuming they're not the last copies). Agitators and memes and fads affect all sorts of products. Destroy/Smash-my-PS2/3/iPhone videos are out there. Videos of folks doing the same with certain Seuss books is similar. They want attention/views/clicks/likes/retweets. If you don't like it, don't give it to them. The best way to respond is to ignore them.
-
Wayward
The best way to respond is to ridicule them and to ridicule cancel culture, and push back. Today, Hasbro responded that they will no longer be taking advice from the American Woke Council and will continue to sell Mr. and Mrs. gender-binary Potato Head. A big win for Americans.
-
atphoenix
(and maybe buy up remaining copies if you think the item is about to go scarce, as if supply falls below demand prices will go up)
-
Wayward
That's the advice I would give to you is to push back.
-
Wayward
Plus, now we have all these amazing new 3D printable Mr. Potato Head bits and pieces from all the publicity.
-
JAA
Reddit now has a 'let other users see my online status' option. I haven't seen it before, so I assume it's new. Couldn't find any announcement though. It was enabled without any prompt even for old users.
-
JAA

There is no such thing as an 'American Woke Council', and I don't see any announcements from today.
corporate.hasbro.com/en-us/articles…ato_head_family_launching_this_fall is from Feb 25 and clearly states the gender-binary products will continue. The saved from from Feb 25 says the same .

1) They're potatos. 2) As far as I know the change was always only about changing the brand name from Mr. Potato Head to Potato Head, the characters still exist and haven't changed. 3) A publisher deciding to stop publishing something isn't "book burning", and it's not the same thing as libraries removing it. 4) Many conservatives like to portray themselves as not putting pressure on companies or society, which isn't true.
-
hook54321
I haven't really looked at the books
-
Wayward
hook54321: the means of getting from point A. to point B. is what makes it defined as 'cancel culture'. Not the actions themselves in a vacuum.
-
Wayward
atomizing things down to a particular mundane activity in the whole chain-of-events does not make it reasonable or redeemable.
-
EggplantN
tbf i think its shocking and needs to be reverted it makes my collectable Mr & Mrs Potato Head collection incomplete now and I bet they're gonna charge a ton
-
Wayward
I want my children and other people's children to still be exposed to gender binary archtypes, and not have to read about these archtypes in history books and museums.
-
Wayward
Not that they're criticized and ridiculed for still using that ancient title prefix on their resumes and business cards.
-
spirit
if you plug in headphones with builtin microphone to an android tablet, will the mic be used by the system?
-
spirit
3,5mm, not something fancy
-
Wayward
spirit: it probably depends on the device, but in my Samsung phone and tablet, no.
-
Wayward
With newer USB-C -to- 3,5mm adapted devices, it might not necessarily be a physical hardware cutoff but a software decision
-
Wayward
but maybe even still accessable at a driver/hardware level, with the built-in noise cancellation microphones
-
thuban
a friend and i tried to build the archivist from the open plans and had a horrible time--a number of the components are non-standard and/or unavailable, the slide mechanism was iffy, and the scan control software would not work even with cameras the underlying lib was supposed to support well
-
thuban
we had to make a number of changes before putting the project on hold due to quarantine and it's still not finished
-
atphoenix
^ a reason to prefer the kit
-
Doranwen
atphoenix: yeah, except there's no kits left, unless someone has one they bought but never built :(
-
atphoenix
Considering that the pandemic means more people are at home, it seems that the demand for book scanners might have increased? Yet production is stopped?
