I wonder if there are any ties between the Archive Team and Vexillology Subreddit.
-
thuban
apparently my internet went out for about an hour last night... and now that it's back i can't load _google_
-
thuban
which would be fine with me, really, except that all my work stuff depends on their services. idk what my isp is doing

i wonder if i can convince my landlord that old harddrives are a valid form of currency.
-
JAA
Damn. After years of wanting to buy HDDs at US prices, it would finally be profitable to ship HDDs from Europe to the US. lol
-
HCross
JAA: I presume you've not looked at courier costs
-
HCross
no way that's cheaper
-
nepeat
jesus what, amazon ran out of stock?
-
JAA
HCross: HDD prices haven't moved a bit here so far, though some models aren't easily available. So even factoring te shipping costs, it'd be a healthy profit.
-
JAA
factoring in the*
-
JAA
There's almost a $100 difference in the product price for the WD Elements Desktop 12 TB. Shipping a 5 kg parcel with ~$3300 insurance to the US in 4-8 working days would be under $100 for me, and that can fit five of them. There are cheaper drives and shipping options as well.
-
JAA
So yeah, profitable.
-
JAA
Unless you only send single drives, that is.
-
nepeat
double checking, you're looking at the third party prices instead of the sold and shipped by amazon price?
-
JAA
Well yeah, at least on that particular model because Amazon isn't selling any apparently.
-
JAA
I haven't checked any other models at all.
-
Wayward
The official Amazon price still goes up $10 every 4 days, like I perviously mentioned.
-
Wayward
assuming they ever get any back in stock to sell.
-
nepeat
they eventually will
-
nepeat
likely in the warehouse sitting on pallets!
-
Wayward
hopefully all these idiots cleaning out everyone's inventory and providing them with a burst of revenue, will help to accelerate the production of higher capacity drives and push us to a new-normal 2 years in advance.
-
JAA
Uh, yeah, no.
-
Wayward
uh, yeah... maybe maybe.
-
Wayward
they're already tooling to discontinue production of 12 TB drives in favor of 16/18 TB drives standard
-
Wayward
if all the 12/14 drives are sold out, gone, then the only thing to buy will be 16/18 going forward.
-
kiska
Yeah no that ain't happening, product segmentation is a thing :D
-
Wayward
gross simplification
-
Wayward
they still have platters they produce at spec, and old spec platters are discontinued forever in favor of new spec platters

Chia might just be a healthy 'laxative' to push out all the old inventory making tomorrow's technology the standard today
-
rewby
It's also a laxative for the money of anyone who needs to buy storage right now
-
Wayward
I wonder if YouTube is still operating at a loss. Maybe they can just delete all their videos and dedicate their datacenters to Chia mining.
-
kiska
I believe with YT premium(red) they are making a slight profit
-
Wayward
So, set aside a few USB harddrives for premium content.
-
kiska
:D
-
kiska
But mostly the premise of YT premium was the removal of ads and some exclusive content
-
JAA
From prior discussion in #youtubearchive, they're wildly profitable these days.
-
Wayward
impressive. it is genuinely impressive how google tricks so many people into buying ads after all these years.
-
kiska
I got YT premium for Google Play Music(which is now gone :( )
-
Wayward
i've never heard anyone celebrate all the money they sales they made from running online ads.
-
Wayward
another curiosity. i know for decades there's been talk about a global helium shortage and eventual depletion (and very sad clowns). i wonder if/when that'll hit harddrive prices.
-
SCSi
Wayward: no clue, but im waiting for it
