» Doranwen wonders how to set up a *sound* alert when her RAM usage gets too high
-
Doranwen
everything I can find online is all about scripts and commands and email alerts, but I need a sound alert that'll tell me "take care of this now or you'll have the computer lock up for a while!"
-
Doranwen
because it only slows down noticeably seconds before it becomes unusable, giving me no time to analyze the problem and figure out which program I need to close or whatever
-
» Doranwen doesn't want to wait till past 99% usage to find out, lol
-
thuban
i mean, you can turn any script into a sound alert by calling some form of media player
-
» Doranwen nods

Doranwen
I set up a command to call xplayer to play a particular sound
-
» Doranwen almost never has xplayer open and it ought to be lightweight enough
-
thuban
isn't that a single-instance application with a full gui? i meant, like, aplay/paplay/mpg123
-
thuban
(can you tell i haven't used a de in years)
-
Doranwen
LOL
-
Doranwen
can you tell I almost always use a gui? :)
-
Doranwen
except when it comes to certain things where the terminal is far superior… I just don't have enough commands and their syntax memorized
-
Doranwen
so if the question is between whether I spend time looking up how to type this command or that command (and hopefully I understand the instructions on that - most of the time I find helpful pages but sometimes I have to give up on it because I can't make sense of it), or whether I install something with a gui that I can find and figure out how to use without studying technical explanations…
-
Doranwen
xplayer won't take more than a few mb on my system, and if I have the warning set early enough, I can easily close it - and whatever else is causing issues
-
JAA
Doranwen: 'except when it comes to certain things where the terminal is far superior…' So basically anything except web browsing and video editing? ;-)
-
Doranwen
LOL
-
Doranwen
database editing is much faster with a form
-
Doranwen
and I use quite a few programs that there are no cli equivalents
-
Doranwen
RSS is way easier with a gui
-
Doranwen
browsing my hdd is WAY easier - I use SpaceFM and have three panes, each with *multiple* tabs so I can jump to any hdd/main area very quickly
-
Doranwen
terminal use requires typing - lots of it
-
Doranwen
and there are quite a few scenarios where *clicking* is far faster
-
Doranwen
the one area I use frequently where the terminal is superior is text manipulation, and I copy/paste the commands and then use the up arrow to retrieve from the same terminal window, so I don't have to find the command afresh every time
-
Doranwen
also, installing programs is easier in the terminal - as long as one knows the exact name of the program
-
Doranwen
for "I wonder what there is to do this" browsing the software manager is generally where I start
-
Doranwen
there are positives and negatives to both terminal and gui
-
Doranwen
but I'm always going to use whatever will be the fastest method to achieve exactly what I want, which currently means 95% of the time gui and 5% terminal, for some totally-estimated numbers
-
JAA
Database editing is faster with a form? I'm sorry what‽ Maybe for individual entries, but definitely not for large-scale manipulation.
-
JAA
RSS, well, yeah, depends on what you're trying to do.
-
Doranwen
well yes, I meant individual entries
-
JAA
Can be sort of similar to web browsing.
-
Doranwen
every time I add a new record to the one database I frequently work on - which has like 9 junction tables - there's no way I'd want to try to insert all that data manually with commands
-
Doranwen
I do use SQL for some large-scale manipulation, yes
-
spirit
different people have different preferences and usage patterns, the end
-
JAA
Yeah, adding entries manually is definitely easier with a form.
-
JAA
spirit: No, my way is the only right way. :-)
