andrew do you have a spare x16 pcie slot that supports bifurcation? ive been toying with the idea of one of these:
amazon.co.uk/PCIE-Adapter-Controlle…Bpcie%2Bcard%2Caps%2C50&sr=8-4&th=1
-
imer
threedeeitguy: bifurcation mobo support was pretty annoying on am4 when I tried it, so definitely double check your mobo manual (or bios) before buying, once I found one that worked, the card (not the same model, but same concept) worked flawlessly though
-
imer
that said, think it'd gathering dust in the parts drawer currently, buying super cheap ssds is not worth it, they're still ass even if you put 4 in raid0 (thankfully good ones have come down in price a bunch)
-
threedeeitguy
immer yeah it can be a pain on some platforms. Im on threadripper so good motherboard support thankfully. No gen 4 support here so I was thinking about something like the 970 EVO Plus 2TB. Probably just a 4x raidz1 since everything will be well backed up.

VirusTotal recently added a "Download" button on their reports but it still only works for premium users, I'm currently archiving an old MMO and have found the MD5 hashes of some files that aren't available online but are on VirusTotal, is there any way for me to download these files, is there anyone I can ask to download these files for me?
-
kpcyrd
that's a very intersting trick. but now I wish more then ever the anti-virus community would've moved to sha256.
-
icedice
PredatorIWD: So VirusTotal actually keeps the files instead of deleting them after generating the MD5?
-
icedice
As I see if you have two options:
-
icedice
1. Ask VirusTotal themselves for help
-
PredatorIWD
icedice: Yes they keep the files, you can click a button on their site to re-analyze any file, they have to still have access to the original data to do that. I doubt they will grant me these files but I will try, it probably would be easier for someone with a premium account to download the files for me but I from what I see its not easy to get that account as you need an enterprise
-
PredatorIWD
*but from what I see
-
icedice
2. Find a premium user via Twitter, Mastodon, BleepingComputer Forums, Wilders Security Forums, MalwareTips Forums, Reddit, or various anti-virus vendors' forums
-
icedice
Or I guess 3. pay for premium for one month
-
icedice
You could maybe find someone among VirusTotal's power users as well:
virustotal.com/gui/top-users
-
imer
-
imer
ah, nvm thats "enterprise" not sure if that even applies
-
joepie91|m
I will ask around
-
joepie91|m
I might know someone with access, emphasis on 'might'
-
joepie91|m
if I don't report back, I didn't get an answer :p
-
joepie91|m
would definitely recommend reaching out to virustotal directly as well, and being detailed in explaining why you want those specific files
-
joepie91|m
cc PredatorIWD
-
joepie91|m
the main thing is that they're not gonna give you the files if they suspect that you have sketchy intentions, so it will probably help to be explicit about the purpose, and make it clear that these are not actually malware files nor private, just 'lost' files
-
joepie91|m
(and yes I can confirm that they do keep the files)
-
PredatorIWD
joepie91|m: Of course. And thanks for trying regardless what happens. VirusTotal is quite popular and houses a lot of files that aren't anywhere else, I hope at some point they will open their vaults for people wanting to search through for valuable data
-
joepie91|m
PredatorIWD: it's very unlikely that that will ever happen to a bulk degree, simply because it will contain lots of private uploads
-
icedice
PredatorIWD: If there is coverage of it on Lost Media Wiki or their forums it might be worth including that link to prove your intentions are good
-
andrew
threedeeitguy: I have 40 available PCIe lanes, all of which support bifurcation :D
-
threedeeitguy
andrew in which case I 2nd my own idea for a pcie nvme card :D Im just building out my old desktop (1950x) into a truenas box. The plan so far is a 4u 24 bay rackmount case, LSI 9305-24i. ive got a hodge podge of consumer hdds atm which im slowly replacing with used 8tb Ultrastars. 4x 970 evo's on a pcie riser in rz1 for VM's, a tesla p40 I scored
-
threedeeitguy
on ebay and a 2x10gb spf+
-
andrew
threedeeitguy: I still can’t decide which SSDs to buy, how many, and when :D
-
threedeeitguy
eh, prices are always going to keep dropping. Just gotta find the best deal today and don't look back.

does anyone have a good method to download a dropbox 'public shared folder' (
dropbox.com/sh<id?>/<key?>) en-masse? it's too big for their zip function; and even individual folders are too big unless i drill down
-
fireonlive
and my dropbox account is too smol to copy it over and do it the more traditional way

fireonlive: JDownloader 2 should do the trick
-
icedice
Just make sure to grab the installer from
jdownloader.org/jdownloader2
-
fireonlive
icedice: ah! thank you
-
icedice
The ones on their main download page are bundled with adware
-
fireonlive
ohh gross
-
fireonlive
good tip too thanks
-
icedice
That hidden away download page has the adware-free installers
-
icedice
A programmer I know said that he and his friend looked into JDownloader 2's code and that it could technically send remote commands to clients or something like that btw
-
icedice
There has never been any complaints about that though
-
fireonlive
hmm
-
icedice
And there is no download manager with nearly as good file host support
-
fireonlive
i'll run it in a sandbox or a container
-
icedice
They cover like 2000 sites
-
icedice
A lot of the video sites are covered by yt-dlp though
-
icedice
You can run it in Sandboxie yeah
-
icedice
I'm going to keep using JDownloader 2 until they've given me a reason not to
-
fireonlive
:)
-
icedice
It's like crack
-
fireonlive
i see it runs on linux as well
-
fireonlive
perhaps i could dockerize it
-
icedice
Once you start using it, you can't stop
-
fireonlive
gotta grab dem files :3
-
icedice
I'll ask the guy for a summary of their findings since I can't find his old messages about it
-
icedice
I did ask if it could be related to the MyJDownloader remote control thing (adding links to JDownloader 2 remotely via their Android app or browser), but he said no
-
icedice
Oh, and don't use JDownloader 2 for YouTube
-
icedice
yt-dlp can get better quality on some videos since it unlike JDownloader 2 remuxes the best video track with the best audio track
-
icedice
JDownloader 2 just grabs the best already available video
-
icedice
And back up JDownloader 2 sometimes, if JDownloader 2 crashes, it can lead to losing the links you've added into it or having to re-add them as new links
-
fireonlive
ah ye i have gallery-dl and yt-dlp onn hand too
-
fireonlive
ohh interesting
-
icedice
That's mostly a concern for lower specced systems though
-
fireonlive
i guess the db it uses isn't too resiliant
-
icedice
Like when my craptop hit 100% memory usage
-
Terbium
JDL2 does slowly increase memory usage with more links
-
icedice
JDownloader 2 itself doesn't use too much memory though
-
icedice
I'd like to use gallery-dl, but it requires a lot of custom configuration to give a decent output format that I can't be arsed with
-
icedice
Not even sure if there was documentation about that outside of GitHub issues
-
fireonlive
it's there it's just a bit hard to grok
-
icedice
I still have no idea why they don't handle output from Reddit rips in a sane way
